1857 Days Ago

February 11, 2006

A couple years ago it started to become trendy to label blog posts and comments with relative times. I believe this was first popularized by Textpattern, but is now available in nearly every blogging software.

Now that the novelty has worn off, I want to let everyone know that relative dates suck. Sure, they are kinda cool in the immediate hours following a post, particularly if you are not sure what time zone an absolute time refers to. However, after a day or two this benefit wears off. Unless we were talking about the Universe-Wide-Web, in which case dates might not make sense anyway.

I mean, if I see a post labeled “Jan 10, 2001”, that gives me a hell of a lot more idea when it was posted than 1857 days ago.
