Gratuitous Javascript Functions

October 7, 2006

No posts for a month and still no time to write anything substantive. However, I thought I’d share this little gem.

function MM_openBrWindow(theURL,winName,features) { //v2.0

For those with their head in the sand, the MM are the dreaded Macromedia family of functions that Dreamweaver et al like to sprinkle through your source code. I’m not a Javascript purist in any way. I see nothing wrong with using cross-browser boilerplate code that does what you need with no fuss. The MM functions are ugly, but effective.

But what the hell is this function all about? Just an alias to window.open… but it’s v2.0. What the fuck? (that’s right, I actually typed it out). Is this a microcosm of Web 2.0 hype? The same old shit with a longer, more cryptic name? I’m trying to imagine what v1.0 looked like…

Zach, I thought you were all about “Web 2.0 is dead. Long live the World Wide Awesome” (WWA)
